Dream House

Studio Project Outline
This studio is an introduction into systematic design processes and techniques. We will focus in analytical typological research, form finding architectural procedures and finally in the development of a small scale project.

The Dream House studio consist of three phases, described in detail:

Phase one (analysis) is concentrating in analysis of renown housing examples, done by famous architects of the last century, such as Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, Adolf Loos among others. The different spatial and structural qualities will be filtered, categorized and presented to the rest of the class.

Phase two (morphogenesis) will include abstract morphological studies based on physical modeling techniques, aiming to explore potential organizational, spatial and structural systems. The results of the previous analytical phase, should set the guideline for this spatial and structural research procedure. Students should produce a minimum of three spatial physical models. Urban context parameters will not be considered at that time.

In the third phase (translation), the geometrical studies generated in phase two, will be developed further, into a “dream house”, indicating a small scale house (60-120m2 ), where each of the participants would dream of living, located on the country site, near by the beach. A story board scenario for the characters and the lifestyle of the house users, should define the final housing program.

Different drawing, modeling and presentation techniques will be explored. Floor plans, sections, elevations 3d digital and physical models are expected, in the scale of 1:100, as well as a site plan in 1:500. Each student should produce a minimum of one characteristic visualization of exterior and interior aspects.

Required tools / skills
Material and equipment for physical modeling. Basic computational CAD and visualization skills are an advantage.
